Are artificial teeth as hard or last as long as real teeth?

With the inconvenience and cost related to custom crowns the question of how good they are and how long they last comes up. What about the "while you watch" teeth made with the new CEREC process?

One such material these crowns are made of is called BruxZir Solid Zirconia. Previously this material was strong but recent advancements have made it visually appealing as well. The CEREC tooth making system isn't new but has finally become a more complete solution.

The CEREC "custom teeth while you watch" system uses BruxZir milling blanks that your tooth, crown or veneer is carved out of. Normal "porcelain fused to metal" type implants aren't near as strong as material like BruxZir.

So the answer to the original question is yes certain replacement materials are actually harder than your natural teeth or the porcelain equivalent.

The more interesting question would be is a harder material better? As a consumer we want to be sure the sizable investment in our mouth will last. It seems smart to be concerned that a new kind of crown or implant will last. The irony is a harder material can actually be a bad thing.

Think about it. The artificial teeth that are super hard then come into contact with other natural teeth that aren't. This can cause damage. The best solution is a material such as BruZir that strikes a tooth healthy balance.

Feel comfortable that your investment in CEREC system made custom implants, crowns and veneers is safe.

It's likely this sort of custom dental work will still be around long after we're gone!
